Reflections on COP26: implications for Colombia and its environmental commitments

Grace Quinceno

In its participation in the COP26 in Glasgow, Colombia ratified its commitment to reduce GHG emissions by 51% by 2030, as presented in the Nationally Determined Contributions updated in December 2020. To achieve this goal, different actions and strategies were presented: diversification of the electricity matrix, use of electric vehicles, protection of land and marine territory, and joint activities with other countries in the region. It was also able to secure financing for more than US$1.2 billion from multilateral agencies and partner countries to meet the goals established. However, despite the actions presented by the current government, the country faces great challenges to meet its climate objectives: adjustments in the economic model, socio-environmental conflicts and the Peace Agreement, or the governance and presence of the State in the territory.
