Europa-Universität Flensburg

General description

In Germany, the Fossil Exit Group, in collaboration with the Office for International Projects, hosts the European regional hub of TRAJECTS.

 Fossil Exit Group

It is an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research group led by Prof. Dr. Pao-Yu Oei. It is part of the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (ZNES) at Europa-Universität Flensburg (EUF) and is co-hosted by the Berlin University of Technology (TU Berlin). The group's main focus is to analyze how the production and consumption of coal and natural gas can be reduced through effective energy and climate policies. This aims to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis and facilitate a just transition to renewable energy systems at both European and international levels.

A key research interest of the group is designing energy transformations that are socially just, ecologically sustainable, economically viable, and feasible within the necessary timeframes. This includes addressing dynamics in both the Global North and Global South, with case studies from Colombia, South Africa, and countries in the MENA region.

In addition to academic research, the Fossil Exit Group places a strong emphasis on transferring knowledge to non-academic audiences. They actively contribute to public debate and policy discussions about the urgency of transitioning away from coal and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy sources.

The group’s work is organized around three main focus areas:

1. International Energy Transformation

2. European and German Energy Transformation

3. Energy System Modeling

The TRAJECTS administrative coordination team is located at EUF and is integrated within the Fossil Exit Group. The team contributes to EUF’s internationalization strategy by acquiring and implementing strategically significant international projects, working closely with various departments at EUF. They also support the coordination of EUF’s Strategy for Global Responsibility and serve as a central contact point for academic cooperation with partners in the Global South.
